Paris is a great city for shopping, but sometimes
it can be hard to find those little things. Maybe due to the difficulty
of figuring
out what the name of it is in French or maybe due to the rarity of
it, since that particular commestible is not used by the French themselves.
Where can we get those little items that are perhaps a taste of home? Where
do Aussies get their Vegemite? Where to Irish get their Tayto cheese and
onion crisps? Where do Americans buy their waffles? We'll tell you as we
find out!
And we're not just talking about food. Send your suggestions for this column
to the Editor!
FOOD
Pork Pie
You English who miss your pork pies can try the pâté-en-croute
found in most supermarkets. The cheaper the example, the more it seems
to taste like pork pie.
Cheese and Onion crisps
A good flavoured Cheese and Onion Crisp is "Real Crisps".
I think I got them in Monoprix (is that the right name??).
Salt and Vinegar Crisps
Brets S & V are pretty good. Stocked by Champion.
Heinz Baked Beans (and pork saussies), Salad
Cream (if you are French just don't ask... Ed) and some
other stuff available at Carrefour Montesson if you have a car. (Thanks
to Gowator)
Heinz Baked Beans can also be found in Champion at
Alesia line 4! Suddenly my rosbif boyfriend's life lightens up. Aurelie
English style breakfast:
The monoprix 'bacon' is a good approximation .. black puddings/white
are boudin... available in black and white...and toulouse
saussies are fairly
close... (Gowator)
The French have their own black and white puddings and there are
one or two prize winning shops on Rue Dauphine. That said, French
puddings are as different to what we are used to at home as Irish
and English puddings are, or for that matter, as Clonakilty is to
Denny or Olhausen. (DrKev)
MISCELLANEOUS
Theatre Supplies
Came across a shop in Rue du Temple. It does pancake, wigs etc.
Also seems to have a good collection of party stuff. Fancy dress
party?
This
could be your
place. A la Poupée Merveilleuse is the place, 9 rue du Temple.
DIY
The best central Paris DIY store that I've found is in the basement of
BHV. You can enter the shop (and the DIY section) directly from Hôtel
de Ville Métro station.
Second
hand bikes: A shop recomended
for buying second hand bikes. (Tip from gorsebush Pixie and Gowator)
